National Night Out - October 1, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 pm at
Swansboro Elementary School

Please come out and join us for our annual National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Swansboro Elementary School, 3160 Midlothian Turnpike. There will be free food (hot dogs and hamburgers) as well as tables setup by area agencies that will provide information about city and other services available in the area. It will be a fun night of food and fellowship so we hope you will be able to join us.

Also at the National Night Out, we will be conducting a brief membership meeting to elect new officers and to consider expanding the area covered by the civic association toward Forest Hill Road and to the point where Hull and Midlothian meet. Please come out and get involved in your community.

Membership Meetings

Come join us at our quarterly community meetings. At the meetings, lead by Association President Denise Payne, we discuss common issues and solutions to make our neighborhood a better place to live. The Richmond Police Department and the Fifth District Councilperson’s office often attend to hear directly from our residents. We also try to invite a guest speaker to present on topics of importance. All community members are welcome to attend.  If you cannot attend in person, you may call into the meeting at: (605) 313-5856, code 7325720 (NOTE: this is a new code).

Neighborhood Climate Resilience Grant

The Richmond Tree Stewards, in partnership with the Swansboro West Civic Association and Southside ReLeaf, will be planting 100 young trees in approved city street sites between the sidewalk and curb throughout Swansboro West. They will be planting ten trees at a time across the two-year duration of the grant funding. Generally, there will be one planting day scheduled each month except when it is too hot to plant trees. If bad weather cancels one planting day, it will simply be postponed to the following month.

Some planting locations can only support a small or medium tree due to overhead wires or how narrow the space is between the curb and sidewalk. The right tree must be selected for the right location to avoid issues down the road like buckled sidewalks. That said, there are a number of difference tree species that could work in any given planting site so the person living at that location will be asked for input on the tree selection and every attempt will be made to plant a tree they select.

Association By-Laws

At the August 3, 2023 meeting of the Association, the membership voted unanimously to adopt new by-laws for the Civic Association.  Please feel free to submit comments and question to rvaswansborowest@gmail.com.

Community Clean-Up

The association sponsors a neighborhood clean-up the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 to noon.  We meet at 52 East 32nd Street at the corner of McRand Street.  Bags, safety vest and pickers are provided.  If you cannot make the clean-up, please consider picking up litter on the your block at another time during the month.  Every little bit helps.  If you would like more information, please email rvaswansborowest@gmail.com or text/call ‪(804) 592-0708‬.  You can also signup for the clean-up events on meetup.com in the "RVA Clean City Sweep" group.
